First stop in Cameroon: travelers arrived in Douala

The travel team has arrived safely and on schedule in Douala, Cameroon! This is the first stop in Cameroon on their trip.

Rob, Gerritt, and Ashley met Stephen in Paris early this morning before boarding the flight to Douala. They successfully met Elise (a Peace Corps volunteer) and the driver at the airport with no issues. The team is receiving extensive support from Peace Corps volunteers during this trip. Elise has been an extraordinary help in arranging logistics for the team for this first stage of the trip!

After leaving the airport, the team dropped their things at the hotel (which has running water and air conditioning) and went out for dinner. The team will spend the night at a hotel in Douala and leave bright and early for Kumbo. They are aiming to leave Douala at 5:30am. The drive to Kumbo will take most of the day. In Kumbo they will meet Julius (the community contact), another Peace Corps volunteer, and the construction manager. They will spend tomorrow night in Kumbo. We’re looking forward to more updates from the travelers and hopefully pictures!

Get to know Cameroon: The word Cameroon is derived from the Portugese word Camarões, for shrimp. Rio Dos Camarões was the name given to River Wouri by Portuguese Explorers in the 15th century due to its abundance of shrimp.
